Why
The Little Green earns its reputation as a spot cleaner. It’s the top pick at Wirecutter and a long-running favorite at Good Housekeeping. But it isn’t the miracle machine TikTok shows you. It works best on fresh messes and lightens old stains rather than erasing them. Paying the $129.99 list price makes no sense when it regularly drops below $100.
What it is
A corded spray-scrub-suck machine for rugs, upholstery, stairs and car seats. You fill a 48 oz tank with hot tap water and Bissell formula, spray through a 3-inch brush tool, scrub, then pull the dirty water back into a separate tank. It has no heater and no motorized brush. The scrubbing is your arm.
It has 4.5 stars from 94,744 Amazon ratings and is #1 in Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning Machines on Amazon.
What owners and testers praise
- It really does lift fresh and food stains. In Wirecutter’s tests it removed Nutella, peanut butter, yard dirt, red Gatorade and Fanta better than its competitors and had the highest overall score. Good Housekeeping’s lab removed fresh and 24-hour-old red wine, pie filling, spaghetti sauce and tea.
- Pet messes. This is the most common use case in owner reviews. Wirecutter staffers specifically credit it with cleaning up cat vomit.
- Grime you didn’t know was there. “The water was so dirty” is the recurring theme in five-star Amazon reviews of couches and car seats.
- Easy cleanup. The included HydroRinse tool flushes the hose after each use.
- Customer service. Wirecutter asked Bissell’s chat support about a missing part and got a reply within a minute, plus the part for free.
What owners complain about
Amazon’s review summary counts mentions by theme. The negatives cluster in four places:
- Leaks. Of 1,416 reviews that mention leaks, 1,318 are negative. Most describe the clean-water tank or hose connection dripping. A Reddit thread in r/VacuumCleaners is titled “Bissell Little green leaking.”
- Suction. Of 1,617 mentions, 971 are negative. That’s the only major theme where complaints outnumber praise. An r/CleaningTips thread calls it “often-recommended on this sub but fundamentally does not work.”
- Durability. Of 1,202 quality mentions, 1,065 are negative. Examples include a sprayer that died after two years, just outside the 1-year warranty.
- Effort and dampness. Every expert source says it needs real scrubbing and leaves fabric damp for hours. One Amazon owner reports carpets dry in 3–4 hours. Wirecutter says to expect anywhere from 2 to 24 hours, depending on the material.
Testers add a few design gripes. Wirecutter says the tanks have rounded bottoms (you can’t set them down to fill), the hose is stiff, and there’s only one brush tool. Bob Vila measured about 76 dB, loud enough to drown out conversation.
Red flags in the review pattern
- The listing mixes models. The Amazon page groups several Little Green “styles” (standard, Deluxe, Mini, Special Edition) under one listing. That headline star count isn’t purely the 1400B.
- The spread looks normal, not inflated. It’s 75% five-star, 13% four-star and 5% one-star. The one-star reviews repeat the same specific failures (leaks, weak suction) rather than random noise. We read that as a real but minority quality-control issue, not a fake-review problem.
- The marketing promises more than testers found. The listing says the formula “permanently removes stains.” Wirecutter found that no spot cleaner it tested fully removed red wine, coffee or blue Gatorade. They were lightened, not erased.
Specs vs. claims
| Claim / spec | What we found |
|---|---|
| “Large 48 oz clean water tank” | Accurate. Wirecutter’s alternative pick (Pet Pro 3909) has tanks twice as large |
| Weight | 9.7 lb (Amazon) / 9.65 lb (Wirecutter). Second-lightest in Wirecutter’s latest round |
| Cord / hose | 15 ft cord, 4.5 ft hose (Tom’s Guide) |
| “Permanently removes stains” | Not supported for tannin and dye stains in independent tests |
| “Scientifically proven to lift 100+ messes” | Bissell’s claim; we found no published study to check it against |
| Warranty | 1 year limited, shorter than the Pet Pro 3909’s 3 years |
Price history and fair price
The list price is $129.99, but the machine rarely needs to sell there. Amazon price-tracker data shows it at $84.99 on Oct 6, 2026 (an October Prime sale also reported by Tom’s Guide on Oct 7). Over the past year it has repeatedly dropped to $99.99–$109.99. The lowest point we saw was $62.88 in December 2025.
Fair price: $85–$100. Above $110, wait. It goes on sale often enough.
Alternatives
- Bissell Little Green Pet Pro 3909: Wirecutter’s pick for frequent messes. Tanks twice the size, three tools, 3-year warranty. It cleaned slightly worse in their carpet tests and weighs 11 lb.
- Shark StainStriker: on par in Wirecutter’s testing. Its pet-mess tool traps solids before they reach the hose, but it uses two formulas, so refills may cost more.
- Kenmore SpotLite: the non-Bissell option, slightly better on coffee and wine in Wirecutter’s tests but clunkier.
- Nothing at all: Wirecutter notes that dish soap, hot water and a rag handle many food stains just as well. Buy a machine for frequent or gross messes, not for one coffee spill.
- Whole-room grime: rent or buy an upright carpet cleaner, or hire a pro. The Little Green is the wrong tool for that.
Final call
BUY if you have pets, kids or light upholstery and deal with messes more than once a month. Pay $100 or less, and run it within the return window so you catch a leaky unit early.
SKIP if you want to deep-clean whole rooms, expect old wine or coffee stains to vanish, or want a product that will outlast a 1-year warranty with heavy use. For heavy use, the Pet Pro 3909’s 3-year coverage is worth the extra money.
